Baptisms in Bafour - Sunday, 8 June 2008
This will go as the first entry on the Bafuor blog as soon as I have it up, but for now since this is a church plant of the Nawile church I\'m putting it on Nawile\'s blog. We went to see a new church being planted in Bafour this Sunday. It rained and so everything started late, but there where Christians from several different villages who were witness to around 60 baptisms in this new village. Praise God for those he is bringing into his kingdom.

The conference in Nawile this time was great. The theme was on how taking care of the needy is a part of being a Christian. We probably had the most participation (as far as Dagara\'s doing the teaching) that we\'ve had so far at one of these. The Nawile church did a dramatical presentation of the story of the good Samaritan. Donatien preached a sermon from the story of the good Samaritan. We all had good discussions on what the spiritual sources of poverty are and what we can do to help others. We as westerners are trying to walk the thin line between refusing to give handouts to them because good mission policy says that whatever is done in the name of Christ should be sustainable once we\'re gone and pre-empting and distorting what giving they really CAN do in the midst of their poverty by pouring, to them, unimaginable resources in aid to help with their problems. So far I have felt that we have erred on the side of the former without enough basic generosity on our part. I\'m trying to see how we can transition into more generosity while still listening to the warnings of doing so in a way that is disrespectful to the dignity of the Dagara. If you are sitting in the U.S. reading this and are thinking I know exactly how to do a well project or how to teach third world sustainable farming techniques or how to teach third world micro-business or literacy, etc. please contact me. I feel that with the right spiritual wisdom and financial sacrifices we can see the Lord\'s prayer answered among the Dagara - that not only will there be those who have left the spiritual darkness of fear of the ancestors and entered into the free gift of eternal life, but that also we may see what God has dreamt to happen hear on earth as it is in heaven.

My trip out to Nawile this evening was especially to follow up with the orphan, Ma-mi. A couple of small groups in the States have partnered with the church in ministering to a family that has taken on the care of an orphan. I dropped off some milk and after visiting with the family we all continued on towards church. I look forward to following up with this congregation to see how they apply my encouragement in ministering to backsliders. This Friday I plan to join them as they begin a new church plant. They have requested that I participate in the first lesson but drop out later on.

Today there were 43 baptisms in the village of Nawile. God be praised! These are people who have been committed to several months of prayer and worship in making this decision. Pray for the blessing of this new kingdom land. Another great praise is that the entire baptism service and lessons were handled by the church from Dano- Pari. It is an amazing thing to see Dagara Christians discipling younger Christians.

Today we prepared the group in Nawile to consider baptism. In two weeks they will decide. They are taking time to reflect and pray. I am very optimistic since they already think and act like a church in many ways. Pray for the Harvest and for disciples to grow.

Nawile is quickly growing. They have already decided to start meeting for a singing time independent of our bible study. They will start meeting late on Saturday evenings for worship as a group. Pray for God\'s protection and guidance.

The second lesson went as well as the first! Praise God for how prepared this village is to seek him. Today we reviewed the main points of the creation lesson and talked about the story of Noah.
Afterwards they were so eager to continue that we discussed implications of the New vs. Old Adam and the faithfulness of God to all of his promises. Several people from the preaching point are now going to Dano-Pari on Sunday's to worship until they begin their own Sunday services.

Today was the first lesson. It was amazingly prompt a great showing.
There were about 15 men and the same number of women (in addition to numerous children). Please pray for Germain (Jo-nyine) as a leader.
He is illiterate but wants to grow as a teacher. Today he did something I have yet seen. In teaching songs he went beyond just the words. He made sure people understood the implications of the songs.
This is the first time I have seen this among the Dagara. Please pray for this young group. Pray that God will birth a church.

Today we had the preliminary visit for this preaching point. The people asked many of the standard questions. What will you tell us we can't do? And many other questions relating more to culture. Overall it went well and the people decided to start having meetings next week. On the way out though I feel like I tested the limits of receiving hospitality. Several important people wanted to offer dolo ( a local beverage). I was trying both to be polite and to respect the time that I told Amy I would be home. In my haste I actually had to accept the invitation three different times! I am not a fan of dolo and it is an act of ministry for me to drink it. Perhaps next time I'll spend time more with the first invitation.
