Muturi
Check back here often to read stories of the Muturi church and fellowship with them in the name of Christ.
Send them an encouraging message.
We began preaching in Muturi at the beginning of 2006 and many folks were baptized in June of the same year. This is the most urban church we have to date in that Muturi is really a part of Dano. It is good that some of our friends whom we have met and who have become disciples of Christ now have a place that is close by for fellowship and corporate worship. Aryena, the Carters night guard, is a leader in this congregation.

Well, we really cannot think of it all. The church in Muturi has decided to start a choir... in French! Even though only a couple of people speak French in this church of over 60 people they have decided to rehearse some songs for presentation to the community. This is an idea from their church and for their church. Pray as they God develops his witness in them and for the community.

Today Kyle and I did a bike through visit of Muturi. Our goal was to find a particular leader who handles their attendance book and discuss reversions. He had just left town so we want on a short tour of greeting church members. We spent about 2 1/2 hours going to different members homes and visiting. Poo-nyoo, an older respected lady in the church, took charge of the attendance book and understood our lesson on seeking out those who had been absent from church for a while. We also visited with two older men who are virtually the only people in their families not attending church. It is really incredible to walk into some compounds and recognize half a dozen Christians.

When you\'re with a not-quite-two-year-old, there are plenty of both perks and disadvantages to a church taking forever to show up for worship. On the plus side, Elijah got to chase chickens and goats, \'chat\' with some new friends for 15 minutes, help a lady wash clothes, stare down a well (secure in Daddy\'s arms) and watch a woman making some of the local beer. On the negative side, by the time the worship service finally got rolling, he was already exhausted beyond comprehension. However, the Christians were very understanding, and a number of them took their turns both holding Elijah and chasing him down. I was amazed at the number of women that showed up (upwards of 40), but I was a little disappointed in that there was just Arnyine (the man who helped plant the church) and one other young man there.
I had hoped to meet some of these new men who have come to the Lord in this village. It was an exhausting outing, but it felt good to be back out in the afternoons.

Today the church continued to plan to host for the leaders meeting. I see a Spirit driven change in their hearts as they plan this gathering compared to how they planned the previous \"party.\" The church is going beyond taking care of the guests. They are giving up their rights and choosing to give the best seats and the best food to the representatives from the other churches. (e.g. wait till lasts to be served, give up their seats in the meeting house, etc.)

The interns had their visit to a Dagara church today. They were greeted by the lively folks in Muturi. We finished reading the gospel of Mark and next we will be moving to a study on deacons. Pray for leaders to emerge.

The church baptized three ladies today. The rest of the time was spent in worship and exhorting these ladies in their new life.

Muturi is our closest thing to an urban church. As it is close in like that, I rode my bike out to worship with them. My night guard, who had told me that he was worshipping with them every Sunday morning, also told me that they were meeting at 7:00 a.m. But he wasn\'t there and they didn\'t meet until 8:00 a.m. I watched some folks slaughter a pig for the first hour that I was there. It was ALMOST enough to make one sign off of bacon. Anyway, after it finally got going, we had a good hour of singing. It is wonderful to see how much this folks love to praise God. Anyway, they asked me if I had a word. I read to them from the newly released gospel of Mark the story of John the Baptist. My message to them was that, although John seemed to be a poor man, all the rich folks from the big city, Jerusalem wanted to come out and see him. They also may not have much riches, but people will listen to them because they have the truth from God. Then I asked them to help me do a head count. We quickly found that there were 40 women there, but only 4 men. I said, \"This shows me that there are a lot of folks in Muturi that have access to the gospel, but aren\'t coming.\" I challenged them to dream about what the church would be like if all of them came as whole families. It was a message that seems to have been well received. On my way back home the chain to my bike broke and I had to walk the rest of the way -- quite an adventure.

For Sunday worship in Muturi it was another marathon service. At 8am they were already meeting and singing praises. One surprise was that this morning two older men joined the church for worship. They are the husbands of ladies in the church. There arrival is that answer to many prayers by this church for men to come from their village. The second surprise was a full length 30 minute sermon. It is definitely the first one I have heard in Dagara churches on Sunday morning (most teaching is more informal and Sunday services focus more on praise and the Lord\'s Supper). Donatian taught an excellent lesson on raising our children as Christians and God\'s commandments regarding how we should do it. (Attendance was over 35 women and 5 men)

This evening the church in Muturi discussed the story of the widow\'s offering from Mark. This spawned into discussion on true giving as well as sacrificial giving. It even led into discussion of God\'s will and the provision for accomplishing his will. See the Carter Family Newsletter at http://harvestfields.net/carterfamily for the rumor that the church has corrected.

Praise God for the rain! It began raining in Dano an hour before the normal meeting time for Muturi and it kept sprinkling through their normal lesson time. Since this church meets underneath the open sky, this canceled their meeting for today. Next week...

The church read this evening from the 9th chapter of Mark. There were at least eight new people at service today. This church is trying to be very purposeful in the way they welcome new members. Please pray that they will be graceful as they welcome new folks, treating them as equals rather than belittling them because they have not yet come to church. Muturi also started preparations for the leaders meeting they will host in June! This is a new precedent for Dagara advanced planning!

Harvest Break
The village of Muturi is currently taking a three week break. They have put their mid-week meetings on hold for the peak of the harvest and then will be restarting at the end of Novemember. Current prayers continue to be for men to become a part of this church and for their selection of a new preaching point.
